Back in October we went to London for a fun filled weekend. We started out with MCM Comic Con (a wild disappointment), had an amazing experience eating dinner on a vintage tube train, then started our Sunday at the ExCel for their F1 Exhibition.
Jamie is of course a huge fan of Formula One, Lauren can take it or leave it due to her racing background. Regardless, this was a crack at getting up and personal with some relics from the races and a fun morning out for the two of us.
Lauren's ADHD means she loves museums but struggles standing around taking in one thing for ages. It's a one and done sort of thing with her, see the thing, read about the thing, inspect the thing, walk away and retain the information learnt or forget it depending on if it was interesting. Jamie on the other hand likes appreciating the thing and this is where we come at odds on occasion. Lauren had done the Exhibition at a speed the drivers would be proud of, while Jamie took it all in.
Upon arrival Jay found that his brilliant other half had booked him a little surprise, the driving experience. During this he got to experience driving an F1 vehicle round the track at record speeds. His hands can still feel the steering wheel vibrating.
Going forward we looked at a great many things and learnt about all the main players of this business. What was a bit of a shock factor was the inclusion of a wrecked car, one which the crash we got to witness in the video shown next to it.
We also got to get close to the wall of helmets from the most famous of drivers as well as their suits and on the odd occasion their car.
Jamie views this as a brilliant experience, Lauren agrees but thinks it was a little on the boring side. 90+ minutes did not need to be dedicated to a bunch on helmets, this was mostly writing and videos to watch with the odd cool thing.
The walk around offered the odd interactive experience like testing your reaction speed, we both could NOT be F1 drivers, but otherwise it was pretty bare. When we got to the gift shop there was a selection of 5 things, not well stocked, all extremely expensive, and they don't even provide a bag. If that's not a rip off I don't know what is.
The highlights from this adventure was the helmets, the tyres (Lauren's in the tyre trade now so this is a focus), and having bragging rights about the fact we went. It wasn't all that, it killed a few hours or so nd don't get us wrong, it was interesting, but the story it was telling was not compelling enough through a few looped videos. There was no wow factor for this pop up.
