The York Ghost Merchants
We were in a rush as it was time to start the long journey back to Kent, but before we did it was time to visit another stop on Lauren's destination wishlist... The York Ghost Merchants.
She's been wanting one of these Ghost's ever since her Grandma told her about them during her visit when the shop first opened in 2019. Of course the Ghost's are now hugely popular thanks to social media and there is a queue to get in, but Jamie is a patient man and makes wishes come true. Yogi on the other hand is not patient, but is adorable and as such the Merchant's all fell in love with him and were often visiting him during our 20 minute wait.
We were thrilled to find that the Merchants were dog friendly! So Yogi got to experience the magic too.
The York Ghost Merchants follow the 600 year old tradition of ghost making. Ghost making itself dates back to the 1400s and you'll be pleased to know, it doesnt involve murder.
The idea behind it is to adopt your very own York spirit. The Shambles is crammed with spirits from history, some ghoulish and bloody, some kind and going about their daily business. It seemed the right place for a ghost maker to end up dont you think?
The Merchants are so popular that they have had to open a dispensary around the corner for faster adoption! Each Ghost is handmade and stamped with the crest of the maker, this is how you know each one is genuine. There are even special edition ghosts to get your hands on, these are a limited purchase to stop resale and we got our hands on two little special phantoms which compliment each other.
We got quite the haul, some gifts for family members but the majority for us. They even have a cute little photo op for your ghosts once chosen. Keep an eye out in the shop as well for hidden Ghosts and hidey holes!
What we thought was great was the fact that so much love and dedication goes into every single one of these ghosts. The Original Ghosts are then wrapped in an 1852 map of York and the little ones come in a cute box which has a cut out so they can see. Each box is also adorned with a hand drawn replica of the shop so the Ghosts dont get homesick, we think this is adorable and our Ghosts are well looked after.
