Labyrinth: In Concert
Lauren is a massive fan of David Bowie.
As weirdos, they must stick together, and by the time she had heard of his most famous film being shown alongside a live orchestra; tickets had been sold out.
This was her only chance to see Bowie live, a loophole following the infamous man's death, so she didn't let a little thing like being sold out stop her. No. Lauren continued to check the website until miraculously she managed to score 2 tickets at London's Eventim Apollo.
This was of course an entire month before the event itself, but she's been bouncing off the walls with excitement ever since, so it was no surprise when the actual day came she was buzzing with pure joy and a little anxiety...
We made it, 10 minutes late thanks to Southeastern who had decided to cancel the train 10 minutes before we were due to get on it. Regardless, we managed to skip the queue and walk straight in to grab a drink and our seats.
A live orchestra was a bit of a stretch, it was a band of 4, but they were fun and in time with the movie so it didn't really matter. Lauren got goosebumps the second her hero came on screen and perhaps a little emosh but the buzz of the crowd easily matched any live concert we've ever been to.
There was even an intermission halfway through to go refill on snacks and a drink.
The film, as always, is a cult classic and the dedication from the crowd around us made that extremely clear. People had dressed up, had on shirts with quotes and characters on, and sang along to every song. This was an event not to be missed if you are a Labyrinth fan.
A short post this time but you had to be there in order to experience the vibe. The whole packed out theatre were on the same level, acted as one, and were a bunch of completely roudy goblins cheering on their brethren against poor Jennifer Connolly.
In terms of Merch, there were no clear indications that there was any being sold. Apparently there was a small stand in the foyer but we must have missed this as the next we knew stewards had a small selection during the intermission in trays like an American Theatre. As we were in the middle of a row this was no good to us, but it helped the budget we were on as otherwise Lauren would have bought literally everything.
There was a slight air of disappointment, what we thought was going to be a massive screen with a string accompaniment and saxophone was in fact a small cinema screen considering the amount of seats and 2 keyboards, a guitar, drums and a sax. For a big event this just seemed a little small, but it turned out to be fun anyway even if it didn't quite meet expectations. Our first visit to the Apollo was a successful one and who knows, perhaps one day we will go back!
