Djo

A few weeks ago now, we went off to London to enjoy an evening with Djo, otherwise known as actor Joe Keery.

The evening wasnt one of the best we had ever had. We rushed to get there, queued the length of three different streets and then when we eventually got in we barely got a seat in time for the show to begin. We are fans of Djo or Keery but we'd say more casual fans as although we have listened to all the albums only a select few on each are our favourites and so we know the words to just them. We aren't die hard like the nightmare woman 2 rows in front of us but we'll get to that later.

We have no idea who the support act was. We were in the balcony so couldnt see the stage that well but of course we could hear the music. The downside was that the support act (we found out later it was Keery's previous band Post Animal) were so close to the mics we could not hear a word of what they were singing and it just came across as noise along with guitars.

This was fine. Any sound issues were fixed by the time Djo came on, we heard him perfectly, and it also meant we had time to relax into our venue, have a drink, and just be glad we made it.

When Djo came on he was electric. This man is full of passion for his music and his voice is true to record. We loved the mix of genres and being presented with a fair few songs we didn't know was an eye opening experience. It was nice to go to a gig where we were new to the music. It meant we got to experience the concert in a different light, this wasn't fan service to us, this was a way to experience music.

The familiar vibration in our ribcage as the guitars rocked and Djo sang was enough to satisfy us. We knew three songs and were really hoping for Delete Ya but it never came. There was an encore however and that was brilliant. We also found that Djo isn't much one for stage talk, he's not one of these to bring up issues outside of the venue or chat to you like you're having coffee and then have thousands of voices scream back at him. He thanked us, made lots of appreciative and motivational noises which conveyed he was having a good time, and he focused on playing us the best music he could. The personal touch was real with Djo, he was sharing his passion project with us and we were listening, nothing else needed to be said.

Now for the bad. There's always going to be that arsehole who has too many drinks at the gig and ruins it for someone else. Unfortunately, this was the birthday girl and her way-too-intoxicated friend who felt the need to stand on their seats and block the view of literally everyone behind in order to provocatively dance for the singer on stage who couldnt even see them. When told to sit down the birthday girl did, she apologised and stayed sat, but her friend wasnt having it. She was up and down like a yo-yo, stroking her face and hair like an exotic dancer trying to tune herself into the music. It was addictive watching her, it was so bad we couldnt look away even if we were able to, sadly we werent as she literally blocked everyones view of the stage on the left side. What made it worse was when she was so fixated on her stupid little dance she slid off her seat and practically into the lap of the poor young lad behind her. She continued to dance as he leapt away trying not to touch her, he couldnt have been more than 13 accompanying his sister and parents who clearly were there for her benefit. Poor boy was trying to be supportive and got an idiot for his troubles. It wasnt okay.

Aside from this however, it was an enjoyable night if you forget all of the stress. We probably wouldnt see him again unless he came to our hometown which seems unlikely, but it was a valued experience for the both of us. We also walked three miles that night as Jamie parked the car very far away from the venue but Lauren's not holding much of a grudge...
