Saint Barbara Garrison Church

We visited this church during our rather lengthy adventure at Fort Amherst. We popped out at one of the Fort's openings and were standing at the church entrance. It was closed, but it seemed rude not to have a walk around as it was a beauty of a building with its hexagonal features.

Also known as Brompton Garrison Church, and previously Chatham Garrison Church, the church was built in order to serve military garrisons within the area. Opened in 1854, it was used as a classroom during the week and for worship on Sundays.

Brompton had two churches at one point, this one and a more typically Victorian era spired building which was demolished in 1957. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, while strangely the garrison church didn't receive a dedication until 2002 when it was dedicated to Saint Barbara, the Patron Saint of Artillerymen, Armorers, Military Men and more.

This church boasts stained glass windows, a memorial to the 1857/58 men of the Indian campaign, and a chest tomb and effigy to Major General Charles George Gordon CB. It was interesting to see a church without a churchyard, but considering this was for exclusive worship for those who were stationed nearby and not the general public who would have gone to the other church, it makes sense that it was not a more traditional building.

We've opted to give this little church a post of its own due to its niche history and the fact that this now remains as Brompton's only church as technically the one practically opposite Fort Amherst is in Chatham not Brompton!

We recommend making it part of your Fort Amherst experience as it is nearly on the grounds of the fort so would be silly not to. It is an adorable little building and worth the little trek.
