War Memorial, Sandgate
It feels like our focus nowadays is war history, that isnt intentional, it just turns out that the majority of the history in our immediate area is war based as our home towns were detrimental in the war effort. It was never really a historical era we were interested in, but it has been very eye opening to learn about our home and its history and so we don't mind. Every place has its history and this is ours, so bare with us, historical diversity is coming, it wont be too long until we go on our holiday and share with you all we've learnt while on our roadtrip.
The war memorial in Sandgate has been a landmark for us as long as we could remember. We get the odd bus from this site, members of our family live nearby, this was a landmark of our childhood.
The memorial itself was erected in 1921 for those who lost their lives during the First World War. It was designed by Harry Evans from Folkestone and built by Messrs Prebble and Spain. It was then added to following WWII, a plaque mounted to immortalise those who lost their lives during this war too. Then in 2016 a paver was added to the base of the memorial in order to pay respects to Corporal William Cotter VC who despite being gravely injured, made his way to a nearby crater and led the men there while attempting to keep moral. He refused medical service instead focusing on these men and he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his sacrifice.
The site isn't a big one, sitting quietly with benches on the corner of Enbrook Park, a place of reflection. It is often overlooked and attention is only usually drawn to the site when it is flooded with the poppies lovingly laid here by the community. It is eye catching.
We don't think the site is haunted, and to be honest we aren't sure why this site was picked for the memorial to begin with. We reckon it is due to its proximity to the seafront, but this question has been added to the long list we have crafted to pass to any local historians we are likely to encounter. One day we may know and hope to pass this knowledge to you!
A short one this time, but a worthy one, it needed a mention as it is certainly a hidden gem and these men deserve recognition!
