Aberdour Obelisk
We will openly admit that we never managed to get up close and personal with this site, but there was farm animals in the field and we had Yogi. He's well behaved and ALWAYS on his lead but we try to avoid any distress to animals where we can, so we opted not to walk through the field.
We did see it in the distance however, so decided to continue with the post as planned.
Built in 1744, it is rumoured that the Earl of Morton had this obelisk built so he could point out his land to his friends when in Edinburgh.
Located within the grounds of Aberdour House, the obelisk took a year to build and is completely blank. Meant as a simple landmark to be visible from his Dalmahoy estate, the Earl had this constructed a little under 20 years after his family moved into what was then known as Cuttlehill House from Aberdour Castle, it was then renamed Aberdour House.
Not much history is known on this structure other than how it came to be, but it is a very impressive site. We wanted to mention it due to its connection to the other sites we've explored in Aberdour as they are all interconnected as you'd expect, but we havent had an adventure that linked into each other on this sort of scale before. It just goes to show how small this community within the village was and how impactful the Earl was to Aberdour.
Honestly, we thought that the reasoning behind the construction of this obelisk was so amusing that we really wanted to include it on our blog. It doesnt have any gory history, just the local lord- lording it up!
