Augustine's United Church, Edinburgh

Augustine's United Church is one many people walk past every day and dont even notice. The whole city is gothic so you'd be excused if you thought everything sort of blended in with each other. Non Gothic architecture stands out in Edinburgh, but on the hunt for churches we did notice this one.

In 1802, the United church congregation met in a chapel in Chambers Street but quickly outgrew it. The chapel was demolished in 1855 to make way of the Industrial Museum of Scotland so the church needed to go elsewhere. In 1857 they began work on the current church and it was completed in 1861. Despite it fitting nicely into the gothic surroundings of the city, the architecture is actually a mixture of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Classical. To the untrained eye this all fits into the 'gothic' aesthetic, but it is not Gothic architecture.

Since it was renovated the church became known under a new name, Augustine Church Centre. It now serves a slightly different purpose, and houses a number of charities related to the church as well as several projects. It is still used for worship by Augustine United Church and the Metropolitan Community Church of Edinburgh, but the building is no longer just for this purpose. It has pretty much become a community centre of Edinburgh which we feel is nice. The old building continues on.

Do we think this building is haunted though? No. It seems unlikely that a funeral was held at a church without a churchyard in a city like Edinburgh. Aside from that we can't find anything about any deaths here or any reason why this purpose built space should harbour any spirits. There isn't a lot of history on it at all to be honest, but we share what we can as old church buildings need protecting.
