Church of St John the Evangelist, Whitby

Believe it or not, this was another one of those churches where we found next to nothing about them. We've been quite lucky lately with the ones we've stopped at while passing by, but this example seems to be simply a parish church that lurks at the side of the road and is forgotten as it is nothing special. It is a shame.

But here is what we know.

The Church of St John the Evangelist was consecrated on the 28th of June 1850 and is otherwise known as St John the Evangelist, Baxtergate. It was designed in 1848 by JB & W Atkinson of York and is a stunning example of the revivied earth English style of architecture.

The organ was installed a year after consecration and then the church as a whole was reworked in the early years of 1900s. The mosaic panel of the stained glass window that depicts the Last Supper was placed in August of 1908 and the church has pretty much sat proud here ever since, not recording any notable historic events and not being of any trouble unlike St Ninian's nearby.

This was only an external viewing but it seems that this church still thrives as much as it can in the current climate and it is a crying shame that there isn't anything more substantial recorded about it. After all it would likely have been part of both war efforts and seen some turbulent times that Whitby has experienced within its centuries standing. Alas we can't find evidence to that effect, it just mucked in like other members of the community, perhaps this is why it is still standing and in use.
