Egton Memorial

This one is a little diddy post on an interesting memorial we came across when staying at The Witching Post Inn.

What we originally thought was a war memorial is actually a memorial for John Foster who was a fairly important landowner in the area. If you think back to the Bilsington Monument, this is in the same strain, he did a lot for the community along with his brothers, and it is the Foster family that we have to thank for St Hilda's Church in Egton.

The memorial was erected in 1912 by John's sons and the tenants of the Egton Estate which still stands along with Egton Manor. The Foster family owned the Black Dyke Mills in Bradford and had purchased the estate in Egton between the four brothers in 1869 as a sporting estate.

As time went on the three of the brothers sold their stakes and John, the youngest brother, ended up the sole owner. During their ownership, and something John continued, the Foster's rebuilt many agricultural buildings and also provided St Hilda's and a new school for the young of the community, so it was safe to say that they were well liked.

John died at 78 years old on the 8th of February 1910 and the memorial was placed two years later. We were in debate as whether to publish this at all, or if we should find more about the local man it was dedicated to, perhaps his grave, or even visit the manor. But we remembered Bilsington and thought there was no harm in sharing what we knew about such a well kept memorial.

So here we are and if you're in the area take a look, you can't miss it.
