St Columba's-by-the-Castle, Edinburgh
This is another blink-and-you'll-miss-it Edinburgh site as it is nestled within the gothic buildings of the city and isn't as grand as some of the other churches we've come across.
St Columba's-by-the-Castle is a church dedicated to the worship of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Aptly named for its proximity to the castle, the church was constructed in 1846 and was finished in 1847. It was designed in the Early English Gothic style by John Henderson.
The stone used in construction was brought from the palace of Mary of Guide, the 16th century queen regent of Scotland which was located on the Royal Mile. The layout within the church was influenced by the reforms of the Anglican worshipers which arose from the Oxford Movement so overall it has a very English look compared to the more grander Scottish influential churches.
The church is part of the combined force including Greyfriars Tolbooth and the Augustine United Church, both of which we have explored in previous posts.
Otherwise, there isn't much history to be told on this site. Much like other churches, especially locally to us, which have merely stood the test of time rather than being involved front and centre in notable events. These walls will have seen a great many things, but only as an innocent bystander.
We'd quite like to see inside just to see how much different an English inspired layout is compared to a traditional Scottish Catholic or Presbyterian layout. But otherwise it is another church to tick off the list, it is fun to make a game of them. How many Edinburgh churches can you find when walking around the city?
