St Hilda's Church, Whitby

This particular church has been so infuriating to write about as it turns out there are actually two St Hilda's in Whitby, one Anglican and one Catholic which is absolutely fine. The issue we were having is that our internet searches were confusing one with the other and Whitby's Congregational Church looks a lot like St Hilda's Catholic Church when we reversed searched and so ultimately the mission here was pandemonium.

But we think we have now got the right church for the right history, if anything is wrong please feel free to let us know and we will correct it!

St Hilda's Anglican Church was founded by a French priest, Fr Gilbert, back in the 18th century. Also known as the Church of St Hilda Crescent Avenue, the church has stood here since 1884 despite its tower not being complete until 1938. It was designed by R J Johnson of Newcastle Upon Tyne and completed by G E Charnwood in the Gothic Revival style.

The stained glass was all made by Kempe and date between 1887 and 1906 all except for two windows which were by H W Harvey in 1959. Despite being in keeping with the Victorian fad of Gothic revival, the fittings were all Victorian and Edwardian.

Unlike St Hilda's Catholic Church which had masses of information, this was all we could find on this impressive structure. But to be fair with think the minimal information is probably better in this case for fear of providing the wrong facts.

Ultimately, this was a nice church to walk past and it was impressive standing out in the dark. We vaguely remember that we were in this area when Dr Crank told us of one of the two churches here being the inspiration for Dracula turning into a bat. Considering it is this one and Westcliff Congregational in this area, it narrows it down to two and both would have stood here at that time.
