Wester Aberdour Dovecot
Wester Aberdour Dovecot is one of three dovecots located within the village. The second of course being the beehive one in the castle grounds.
It dates back to the late 17th century/early 18th century and was constructed as a source of meat and manure for the village, however these structures were also a sign of wealth for the landowners as after 1617 only those with significant amounts of land were permitted to build these structures. This one seems quite simplistic, a square planned example very unlike the artistic beehive design of the castle. There were several other dovecot remains found outside of the parish, but Aberdour housed the three which were instrumental to them.
This dovecot is in the grounds of a former alms house set up by the Countess of Moray in 1712. It housed 396 stone nest boxes and despite now being in a ruinous state and roofless, it is still a local landmark. Be aware, it is in someone's back garden so please be respectful.
We can't find much else history wise on this site but it was a fun adventure trying to locate this dovecot. Knowing that these were built to supply the village with crucial things to keep them running fascinates us, but the fact they live on as ruins appeals to us more. It is a shame this one isnt as intact as the one at the castle, but as a landmark to get our bearings it is cool. Like a land lighthouse!
We'd recommend trying to find this one like a little historical treasure hunt, make it a game, have some fun adventuring!
