The Witching Post Inn

*not our photo, taken from Google as we lost ours*

The Witching Post Inn is our favourite place to stay when we visit this part of the country. We've stayed here on both of our North Yorkshire trips and have already booked in a third. We love Pete and his two dogs Nelly and Molly and the locals who we get to know as they come in daily are pretty cool too.

Pete's helped us out with historical places to visit both times we've come here and he treats Yogi like the king he is so thank you to him!

But back to the Inn itself. The Witching Post dates back to 1704 when it was part of a working farm. Twas the Ale House and its sole purpose was to provide the locals and farm workers with ale. This was the preferred beverage of the time as it would put both fluid and calories into the workers which was sorely needed. Also, let's face it, water systems were pretty awful historically, so anything that wasn't water had a preference as if you drank water you'd probably die soon after.

At some point the Ale House continued life as an Inn and was named Ye Olde Horseshoe. This version of the site ceased in 2012 until Pete took over in 2017 and renamed it The Witching Post Inn. This was due to the witching post located in the bar area, it was blessed by a vicar so that witches were unable to enter. Clearly didn't work...

The site is actually haunted, and room 3 which we usually stay in has a resident ghost. We always get a bit of an odd feeling when the witching hour rolls around and we've seen a dark figure near the window, but otherwise we're happy enough and cohabitate with the ghost for however long we stay!

We love coming here as Egton and in turn the Inn has such a nice feel to it. It's fairly isolated, cosy, a tightknit village. When you come from somewhere which is also a small village but everyone hates each other, this is quite refreshing. We wanted to include this one because of its previous life and just because it is really handy when Whitby is only a 15 minute drive away!

Any history is worth investigating to us and considering this is a place you can live in temporarily, it is a decent mention for sure!
