St Hilda's Church, Egton

As mentioned in our last post, it was the Foster family that we have to thank for this church. However, we personally have to thank our Egton landlord Pete for pointing us in the direction of the church to look at when he found out we were history bloggers.

We have found that St Hilda is quite a popular dedication within the North Yorkshire area and we are a little curious as to why, but that can wait until another day.

This particular Church of England church, was built in 1879 after the demolition of the original Norman church in Glaisdale Lane the year prior. It was decided by the Foster family that the community could benefit from a church that was more central to Egton and so local architect E H Smales was brought on board to design it.

They used sandstone and a stone slate roof to complete the church and here it has stood ever since, boasting several memorials to the family who brought it into being. Following it inheriting the mantle of St Hilda and becoming the parish church, very little remains of the old one other than three pillars, the crem chapel, and the graveyard.

It is tucked away a little, but is quite a nice church especially on an autumn morning. We'd recommend popping by just to have a look. We aren't sure it's haunted, but there isn't to say there aren't any ghost stories about it!
