Westcliff Congregational Church, Whitby
Well thank goodness that our Constantine post was so long, as this one is another short and sweet one due to lack of available info!
Yet another church found in our beloved Whitby, Westcliff Congregational Church can be dated all the way back to 1770 with its original placement on Silver Street. Many changes have been made since then and the church we see now in Skinner Street was constructed in 1867 in the Victorian Gothic style. It was made with local Aislaby stone with a spire at 120 feet tall. As a result the trawlermen used it as a marker when coming into harbour.
It also had its own Roll of Honour which marks those fallen in battle, this tribute was removed from the church in November of 2019 and placed within the Whitby Museum.
It is a shame that we don't currently know much about this church as the historical significance is heavily noted, and yet nowhere is it recorded for us to share. We're hoping that we can visit the museum and ask some questions that will provide answers to share with you all the next time we are in Whitby, so keep your eyes peeled for that. But for now we are resigned to yet another minimal post on an important church lost to modernity.
