St Mary's Church, Goathland

We're still on churches, North Yorkshire has so many! But they are all so lovely, and who doesn't enjoy a cosy walk around an old church in the mornings? It's usually quiet and it is nice scenery, perfect for dog walking and enjoying the architecture.

So this post we're looking at St Mary's in Goathland which is a village we associate with the NYMR which we one day hope to visit, but was actually just one we were passing through and decided to stop to look at the church.

The church that stands today was built between 1894 and 1896, but was at least the fourth church to be the parish church of the village since the 11th century. A hermitage chapel stood in the village originally, this was then replaced with St Mary's Chapel in 1568. That was then demolished and replaced in 1820 before the current one replaced that due to its poor structure.

Walter Brierley was brought on board to design this one and it was in the Perpendicular Gothic style, influenced by the 'arts and crafts movement'. It was another church that was completed in sandstone with a slate roof along with a tower. The inside holds a font that dates to 1100 which was saved from an Egton church that was demolished and brought here. Also housed here is a grave slab from 1695, and the alter slab thought to be from the original hermitage chapel. More modern adornments were added to the church to celebrate the Millennium in the form of stained glass windows.

In our opinion, this is a parish church that belongs in a Christie novel, but alas this is real life and there were no murders that we witnessed.

We didn't see any ghosts either and it would be hard to believe that any haunt this place as it seems too calm. If you're in the area it is worth a closer look and you might get inside to see the older slabs which we didn't!
