All Saints Church, York

It appears that none of the churches in this particular area of York has a pinpointed construction date. This is another one that no one knows about, and yet the earliest part of the current church dates back to the 12th century. From this point we can see how the church was rebuilt and extended over the next two centuries.

It was recorded that in the 15th century a squint was made so that local lady, Emma Raughton, who received visions from the Virgin Mary, could observe and hear mass and this was rebuilt in 1910 alongside the anchorite house. Otherwise the church went through heavy restoration between 1866 and 1867 and also had a new organ at this time.

Now we just want to circle back to the anchorite's house as early on in 1930 a man, known as Brother Water Wilman, decided he was going to live there. He was a former clothworker and lay reader and opted to live in the 8x10ft room until he died in the 70s. Here he was able to receive guests and watch church services while living a life of religious contemplation.

The church was again restored in 1991 and this is the version we see today. The church merge with the parish of St Crux when that was closed and also holds the most impressive collection of stained glass windows within York aside from York Minster. It is quite the famous church which is a shame considering so little is known about it!

We feel as though we must include these places though before all history is erased or lost, that is why we do this. No piece of history is too small!

As a side note, we have given this church the haunted rating we have as the likelihood is that Brother Wilman is still haunting that room!
