Central Methodist Church, York

We didn't realise that York had quite so many churches until we walked past them all. What's more, we're certain this isn't all of them, it was just simply the ones we encountered on our route to and from the Shambles.

The Central Methodist Church is on St Saviourgate and has been since 1840. It was designed by James Simpson and has a basement! It also doesn't look like a church...

The church has suffered two fires between 1863 and 1872 concerning the buildings to the rear of the church which were used as schoolrooms. They were rebuilt and extended in the years following the fires. 1887 brought local fame to the church when it became head of a circuit. By 1982 the congregation merged with Wesley Chapel and the church was then renamed Central Methodist Church.

More recently the church has been helping the local community, the homeless, and hosted other activities as well as its dwindling congregation. It still stands strong, a proud reminder of its past here in central York and having stood here this long it will have seen some things, but luckily wasn't part of any of the bloodshed and destruction of the previous centuries.

Another short and sweet one we're afraid, but these churches deserve recognition!
