WHIP MA WHOP MA GATE

We couldn't leave out a post on this iconic street!
With such a unique name it was well worth looking into the little street even if it made for a short post. But what fascinates us is the fact that the street itself is quite short.
The famous York street is adjoined by St Saviourgate and has St Crux Hall backing onto it, but it was actually first recorded in 1505 as Whitnourwhatnourgate. This transitioned into Whitney Whatneygate and the suspected translation is said to mean neither one thing nor the other street. The plaque at the end of the street however says different and lists the meaning as 'what a street!'.
The 17th and 18th century has documents suggesting an alternative name of Salvey Rents or Salvegate, but we agree that the current iteration of the streets name is the best one.
Like we said, short and sweet, but worth the laugh!
