St Crux Church
St Crux's Church is an oddity. We say that purely because it sits between two of the most famous parts of York, the Shambles and Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, but not in its original form.
We don't actually know the origins of this church, we only know that it was recorded in the Domesday Book and at that time belonged to the Count of Mortain. After this it passed into the hands of St Mary's Abbey but we don't know how long for.
The church was rebuilt between 1402 and 1424 which is where the Saxon stone in the North wall came from. The tower was then rebuilt in 1697 which bore admiration from Francis Drake. The church at that time was the finest in the city, but this didn't stop decay setting in and by the 19th century it had become run down. It was closed in 1880 and the parish was merged with All Saints' Church. Plans were drawn up to restore the church in 1884 but instead demolished in 1887 despite objections. The tower was dynamited as it withheld initial destruction.
A year later a parish hall was built on the site reusing materials from the church including the north wall. Quite a few of the original monuments and fixtures were saved and put inside the new building and obviously the burials made here remain. All in all the church technically still stands, just as a very small version of its former self and no longer being holy. But it is a nice site to see and is certainly still one of York's most famous churches even if it no longer has that mantle.
Another short and sweet one but worth it.
