St George's Roman Catholic Church, York

 

Yet another short and sweet post on a church that no one knows anything about in York... This is becoming a bit more than a coinky-dink dont ya think?

On the brightside, as a change to the last few that we've churned out, we do actually know when this church was built. St George's was completed in 1850 after the foundation stone was laid the year before. It was dedicated St George after the medieval church of St George at Beanhills which was supressed in 1547, but that isn't the only church that this one took the mantle for. A new church was needed in York to replace the brick chapel in Little Blake Street which nowadays is called Duncombe Place. So St George's was funded and built so that the immigrant Irish Catholics had somewhere to worship.

However, what truly makes this church special is that opposite you can still see the churchyard that belonged to St George at Beanhills, which now technically belongs to the current St George, and this space is famous as the burial plot for none other than Dick Turpin. That's right kids, the notorious highwayman is buried in York!

This is why we think it is such a great shame that not more is known about this church, it has ample bragging rights and inherited the resting place of arguably the most famous highwayman in Britain. Regardless, both sites are able to be visited and it makes for a great tale to tell!

We wouldn't have said that the church is haunted based on our experience, we aren't sure it has time to be with all the hustle and bustle of York, but we recommend giving it a look!
