Church of the Holy Innocents, Highnam

The Church of the Holy Innocents in Highnam is actually a memorial to Isabella Parry and her three young sons. It was commissioned by the artist Thomas Gambier Parry who owned Highnam Court as a memorial to his family in 1849 and soon became a remarkable Victorian landmark. It was intentionally built in the Gothic-Revival style as Parry felt that it reflected his beliefs and he was committed to this form of architecture. Parry spared no expense and had several talented men on his taskforce and even added his own hand to a painting over the chancel arch that represented the judgement of the good and the evil.

The building was then consecrated in 1851 and has served the parish ever since with the odd renovation. The inside holds dedications to the Parry family, but overall this rather lavish building is one of love and loss. As it is considerably newer than a lot of churches we visit there isn't much history on it so there is nothing else we can tell you. But it has been a while since we've done a short and sweet history post so one was bound to pop up sooner or later! In our eyes all history is worth preservation and so here we are!
