St James' Church, Gerrards Cross

Apologies for our break, we thought we'd still be able to manage the posts while moving but it became impossible. On the bright side, we're back, the living room wall has now been painted, and Lauren has her very own library complete with fancy bookshelves scattered about the house. Our house is now a home, it's only taken 2 weeks!

Not to sound like Taylor Swift, but we're going back to December now when we made a special trip to visit Margaret Rutherford and Stringer Davis while on the way to Stroud. Our Ren and her mum loves this couple and after re-watching the Miss Marple series by Rutherford we thought it would be nice to pay our respects.

However, when we arrived we also got the chance to take in this magnificent church! It was 7am on a very chilly morning but was worth the visit as the sun was rising.

St James was built back in the 1800s and consecrated by the Bishop of Oxford in 1859. It was actually the sisters of General George Alexander Reid who funded the church at sole cost to themselves. Now St James is the evangelical CoE parish church of Gerrards Cross and merged with St James Fulmer in 1986 to serve the same parish. As our famous couple retired locally they were naturally interred here but other than a few notes on the organ we can't find much else about this place.

We can tell you that it is stunning and it is a grand shame we don't know anything else as the structure is quite imposing and not what we expected at all. It also hides a crematorium at it's rear alongside the car park, but the grounds are well kept and it is clear everyone laid to rest here has been done so with respect which continues long afterward.

If you're ever in the area we recommend stopping by! Obviously it was way too early in the morning to go inside and see what this stunning church had to offer internally, but one day we hope to see!
