Flodden Wall

 

Edinburgh has been segregated from the rest of Scotland by town walls since the 12th century, hence the tollbooths. However, today we are looking at the remains of a very specific town wall. This is the Flodden Wall.

Back in the 16th century when the Scots were defeated by the English at the Battle of Flodden (1513), they decided to erect a wall, this became the Flodden Wall. The thought was that now King James IV was dead, as he died during the battle, the English were bound to invade Scotland. The point of them was to defend the town from outside forces, but the walls had several ports which were gates for entry or exit and naturally the walls ended up being easily breached during several occasions. They ended up serving a purpose for traders as they deterred smuggling and allowed for better control over trading and taxing goods.

The walls were demolished in sections during the mid 18th century as they had outlived their use, whatever that had become. While some of the wall remains, like this section by Greyfriars Kirk, none of the ports do, which is just as well as the most famous port was right in the middle of the Royal Mile! 

The English invasion they were expecting never came, instead other trouble did which the walls couldn't stop, but we've already touched on some of that and probably will do again in other posts!

It was interesting to see the history and idea behind this wall though, as it struck us as odd that the remains of a wall should have a little plaque naming it. We looked it up and now pass this knowledge to you!
