Flowergate Old Chapel

 

A blink and you'll miss it find within Whitby, the Flowergate Old Chapel has been around since 1715, although its worshipers have been in Whitby since 1695. 

This group, of Presbyterian origin began worshipping in a house on Bridge Street, but they moved off Flowergate in 1715 and the congregation converted to Unitarian. It was thanks to Leonard Wilde that the 3 floored house in which they worshipped could be converted to a chapel. They kept the gable and a side wall and used a lot of the original roof structure, but otherwise the rest was replaced during the conversion to make it more a house of God. The chapel was then rebuilt, minus the medieval cellar in 1812, losing a lot of the original conversion, it was this renovation that included the new gothic style. 

Now what caught our eye was the blue plaque dedicated to Francis Haydn Williams who was the chapel minister from 1888 to 1910. Now the reason he had been singled out among all the minsters was because he was a social justice activist and therefore a friend of the people, no matter how poor.

The chapel has been out of action since the end of 2025 but is still used for solstices and equinoxes, so while we didn't see inside, it looks like they had just packed up when we view the outside!

Another short and sweet one, but history sometimes is!
