Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry
We are always interested in paying our respects to history's famous dead, and that is what led us to Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry. This churchyard is the final resting place of none other than C.S. Lewis.
The church was designed by George Gilbert Scott, he who also designed the Oxford Martyrs' Mmeorial and Exeter College Chapel. It was then built in 1848 to purpose the people living in and around the active quarry.
The Lewis brothers, Clive and Warren started going to church here in 1930 and remained worshiping here until they died ten years apart. Clearly famed due to their famous inhabitant, the church boats a Narnia window which features images from Lewis's famous works. It was installed in 1991 and commissioned by Sally Scott.
The church does also have another poignant window though. Above the alter is the Christ in Glory stained glass window that was erected in 1951 as a war memorial.
Both of the Lewis brothers are buried here, in the same grave, although as mentioned above, ten years apart. The graveyard is also the resting place of six war graves.
It is a tidy little church, something you can picture from one of C.S Lewis's novels. Cosy, noiseless, and there was a nice little walk over to it from the road. Pop your head in if you ever get the chance!
