Caedmon Memorial Cross
In the picturesque graveyard of St Mary's Church in Whitby, best known for its association with Dracula, sits a rather intriguing memorial.
The Caedmon Memorial, or Caedmon's Cross as it is also known, has stood in this graveyard since 1898. It's location is at the top of the infamous 199 steps just inside the churchyard and is quite obviously dedicated to Caedmon.
We'll be covering Caedmon later, but the gist of it is that he is the earliest English poet that we can prove from existing known works. He lived in St Hilda's monastic community as, of course, he was a monk.
His memorial cross bares a Celtic design and is made out of sandstone. It also marks a quiet place for reflection as well as a beautiful spot to look out over Whitby. Funnily enough we only noticed it properly on our second visit! To be fair our very first visit was in the dark, so it was nice to finally see these landmarks in the light.
Oh we do miss Whitby! But we'll be back!
So if you happen to visit this churchyard while you're out chasing the legend of the vampire, then take a look!
