Guisborough memorial

War memorials always catch our eye, and every single one of them is different. Obviously the thought behind them was pretty uniform as they all commemorate one thing, but as we often say, history is history and all of it is worth remembering no matter how terrible or samey.

This particular memorial stands not too far out of Guisborough Priory. It holds memorials for WWI and was unveiled in May of 1925. A plaque was added later for WW2 as well as other conflicts.

The monument holds names of 198 men who died in WWI, 72 from WWII, 1 from the Northern Ireland Conflict, and 1 from the Iraq War. 

The memorial has a Cross of Sacrifice built on it and as with most of these memorials there was no government funding, instead committees were formed to design and create these odes to local men who lost their lives fighting. The community responded eagerly but when the depression of the 1920s hit the project had to be put on hold as the public couldn't fund it. It took another 4 years for the project to be revived. Money was then paid to the Lord Guisborough for use of the land where it stood and the committee wrote to the council for them to take on caring for the monument.

Originally when the monument was first placed it held only 196 names, but one more from WWI was added in 2001. This was of gunner Albert Bennett, why he was left out originally we don't know, but it seems nice he has since been added, names have also been corrected since then as obviously back when it was still quite raw little information was to be had and not everyone could read and write.
