Knaresborough Synagogue

A little different from our usual churches, we came across this reference to a Synagogue in Knaresborough and so naturally had to find out about it. Our Ren loves a blue plaque and makes it her mission for the stories to be heard.

Back in the 13th century a Jewish community established themselves within Knaresborough and naturally needed a place to worship. So one was set up, but even then it was slightly hidden as it was to the rear of the buildings situated at the end of Synagogue Lane. The exact location of the Synagogue has been lost to history, but not that long after in 1275 the Knaresborough Jewish community dissolved, then 15 years later Jews were banished from England as a whole.

The idea of the Jewish bedding down within Knaresborough has been widely disputed due to lack of evidence. The building of Synagogues was forbidden as of 1222 so we know with some form of certainty that the Synagogue would have stood before then, it is just a difficult one as obviously a large portion of the Jewish community were killed at York and the ongoing theme within history seems that this community are targeted, so to be honest we aren't overly surprised that this small community left hardly any evidence of their existence as it seemed certain it would get them killed.

This plaque was needed. This dark reminder that has been turned into a memorial is still so needed today, not only to remember what was, but what is still happening. And that is all we wish to say on the matter.

Knaresborough has quite the blue plaque trail so if you're wandering around town with a few minutes to kill like we were, then try and find them all! We have put Knaresborough on our revisit list as we stumbled across it by complete accident and then found it was a goldmine of history so we have to return!

We wish we knew more about the Synagogue and Jews of Knaresborough, but it is a rabbit hole which doesn't hold the promise of answers, so we'll continue searching, but it seems unlikely we'll have an update on this one.
