Knaresborough War Memorial
Like we said on Friday, we've been on a bit of a memorial kick lately as somehow all our memorial posts ended up lumped together. Not a bad thing, but also we promise we'll be moving on from the short and sweet posts and the heartfelt memorials shortly.
The Knaresborough War Memorial sits within the grounds of Knaresborough Castle and overlooks the calming and yet slightly doomed Knaresborough Viaduct. It's a place we found to be very peaceful and allowed us a moment to sit and reflect during our slightly hectic Northern adventure at the end of last year. We'd just come back from three days in Scotland, had a loss of our own, it was around Bonfire Night, and we still had another 3 or 4 days of our road trip left. It was nice, but we were grieving and so, so far from home.
Knaresborough grieved too. Their memorial was erected in June of 1921 and lists the names of 155 men who died in WWI and 54 from WWII. As you can see it is lovingly adorned each year with Poppies and well kept showing that Knaresborough never really forgot their dead, and having the memorial within the castle grounds was a clever idea as every visitor cannot miss the solemn site and is welcome to pay their respects and remember the sacrifice.
