Market Cross Fountain
There are so many intriguing pieces of history lying around the place, especially in Edinburgh that people seems to have just accepted. There is barely any history listed on these places, objects, or monuments because they are just there, and obviously back then they all formed a normal purpose for the people, but they don't anymore, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't KNOW.
Rant over, the point is we came across the Guisborough Market Cross Fountain which is hard not to as it is in the middle of the road, but this drinking fountain has little to no information readily available.
We know it has been here since the mid 18th century, and we know that it was altered in 1817. It's made from Sandstone and the drinking fountain was added in the late 19th century and made from pink granite.
It has five sundials, a weather vane, and a stone globe with an iron compass. It seemed to form the centre of the market in Guisborough back in the day and still is a focal point for important events now too it seems. But we just couldn't walk by and not mention it so here we are!
