Black Swan Inn, York

Another short and sweet one today, but this time we are back in York.

Despite having been here twice now, we somehow missed the plaque telling us about the Black Swan Inn the first time. But this Inn, at Number 44, was one of the most important coaching houses in York during the 18th century. The building itself was from the 17th century but had various repairs and improvements right up to 1955 at which point many of the buildings on site had vanished, the entire site was then demolished not long after which is why we only have this to tickle our imaginations today.

So what made it so important? The sheer amount of bodies that visited. The Black Swan Inn was at the time the very hub of transport and the amount of people who stayed here while conducting business in York would have been wild. Sadly it no longer survives and there is limited history to be found without delving into archives we don't have access to, so if you have information to share then please do!
