St Nicholas Church, Gloucester
Considering Ren has been to Gloucester before, we had no idea just how many churches were in close proximity of each other. Some are no longer churches and have been repurposed like in York, but St Nicholas' Church located nearby the Cathedral is not one of them.
St Nicholas Church is actually the city landmark thanks to its truncated spire, but has stood here since 1190-ish. It had gained the name St Nicholas of the Bridge at Gloucester by 1203, but was then rebuilt on a massive scale come the 13th century, despite some earlier features being kept. Further amendments were made in the 15th century which is when the spire was added, but it was shortened thanks to a direct hit during the Siege of Gloucester in the Civil War.
The church was restored again in 1865, and then had to undergo repairs following a fire in 1901. 26 years later the tower had to be stabilised, and then between 1935 and 1938 it was rebuilt again and reroofed before closing in 1967.
Despite closing in 1967, it appears that the church still holds events and is somewhat in use. It is looked after by a heritage church conservation group and has undergone minor repairs, but it is nice for these churches to still be protected despite being out of use. We saw a video of a disused church being demolished the other day, inclusive of stained glass windows and it was heartbreaking, no one had protected this building and that history is now lost. We must save the history, how else will we learn?
